Pros and Cons of Wind Power

Wind power is basically converting the power of the wind into practical uses, such as electricity or other practical applications. This can be done by a home wind turbine, a wind mill, or a wind pump. Even a simple sail uses the power of the wind and uses it to propel the boat forward.

Here are the pros and cons of wind power:

One of the major pros of wind power is that it provides an unlimited alternative energy than the normal means used, such as coal, or other fossil fuels. Wind power is convenient because there is no direct effect on the environment like there is with fossil fuels. Fossil fuels have been proven to be one of the leading causes of global warming, due to the carbon it emits into the atmosphere. Global warming is causing much damage to the planet. By changing the climates across the world many species and natural phenomenon cannot exist, such as the ice cap, or animals that are sensitive to temperature.

Another advantage of wind power is that the home wind turbines themselves take up very little space, sure they are tall structures, but on the ground, there is still much space that can be used. These turbines, or mills can be taller that fifty feet, yet the ground below is still unscathed, meaning it may be used for activities such as farming. However it is not suggested to live under a turbine or a mill because they can get noisy at times. Also, wind mills and turbines come in a variety of sizes, which mean if you plan on getting one for personal urban use you may be able to find one that suits your available space.

However, there are also some disadvantages of wind power, such as the unpredictability of the winds. It may cost hundreds of dollars to put up, yet it may take months or even years to break even due to the constantly changing weather. Also many species of birds are attracted to strong winds, which may cause birds to senselessly fly too close to a wind turbine, which could prove possibly fatal; hundreds of birds die by wind turbines each year.

Pursuing this further, another con of wind power is that they may be damaged in a severe storm or harsh weather, seeing as how the turbines are made of metal they may also attract lightning during thunderstorms. The cost to replace or repair turbines can cost up to several thousands of dollars, which defeats the purpose of saving money and helping the environment.

Learn How To Build Solar Panels and Home Wind Turbines

What are the sources of energy that you are using today? Are you still using oil and fuel, which are harmful to our environment? You should know the truth that it is a serious problem all over the world. Air pollution, global warming, green house effect and more. We are destroying our world every single day. However, it is easy to make a change. Everyone can start doing it today.

I should say it is not wise to wait for our government. There are lots of things for the government to consider and 'going green' is just one of the issues. So you, as a homeowner, have to act now. You should take the initiative to be more environment-friendly and protect our world.

What you can do is to employ renewable and clean energy at your house. You may consider solar power, wind power or any other similar energy. You may even have all of them at the same time. It all depends on your location, your budget and how much electricity you want to generate.

The best part of having that kind of system at home is that it will help you save money. Imagine the situation that you can generate electricity for your family and you need not buy electricity from the utility company. How much money will you be saving? It must be a large amount. In today's society, you cannot get rid of electricity. And using systems such as home solar power systems is the most cost-effective solution.

Some people may be more interested right now but you may start wondering how much you have to invest. Again, it depends on what you want. If you want to just get the system ready without doing anything, you can spend money on asking a professional to help you build the system. In this case, what you have to invest is money.

Another option is to do it yourself. What it means is that you get a DIY installation guide and then build everything yourself. Of course, you still have to invest money but normally you just have to spend $300 or less. It is much cheaper than asking a professional to do the job, which may cost you $2000 or more. You need not worry that you cannot build the system on your own because the DIY installation guide will teach you with the use of eBooks, videos and membership support. If you choose this method, what you have to invest is $50 for the guide, $200 for the building cost and two full days to watch the videos and build the entire system. It is really just a simple job. You may even involve your children in the process. It is a great idea to instill the 'green' knowledge to them when they are young. You will find that using that kind of environmentally friendly system to generate electricity will benefit not only you, your family but also all people around the world.
